Mentor
The mentor’s role is to encourage the development and growth of the new staff member and to ensure the new staff member maintains a steady improvement in student learning in the classroom. The mentor’s role is critical in guiding new staff members to further develop their planning, instruction, and content knowledge.
Mentor Requirements
To be considered for a mentor role, the staff member must have:
- Completed a minimum of 4 years of experience in the role they wish to mentor in (special education teacher, social worker, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, behavior interventionist, paraprofessional).
- Received a proficient or excellent on his/her most recent evaluation.
- Go through the I-KAN Mentor Training in the summer (paid).
- Commit to meeting the program requirements outlined in the handbook.
- Have good attendance. A mentor should not exceed days allowed for absence in one school year (sick, personal), with the exception of FMLA leaves.
